An unexpected opportunity

The wholesale and retail seafood industry may seem a world away from the prestige automotive world. Yet, the time Max Chapman spent as a fishmonger in New Zealand honed his already strong determination, drive and performance mindset - valuable qualities he brings to his role as New Car Sales Manager.

“I have a pretty interesting background, which shows anything is possible,” Max reflects. “I’d been working for a family-owned seafood business for about four years, and I felt I’d reached an opportunity ceiling there. I moved to Australia really searching for an opportunity with a clear career development pathway and the ability to progress within a business.”

A Sales Consultant cadetship at Jowett Motor Group piqued Max’s interest. Despite not having any experience in the automotive industry, Max was inspired and motivated by the challenge and potential for progression.

“The ability to develop and progress was front of mind. I could see that Jowett Motor Group offered a very clear direction for someone who is driven, hungry and wants to commit to forwarding their career. I started completely new to this sector, but I quickly found that this business rewards people prepared to put in the effort and work hard to achieve a result.”

Since joining the Waverley BMW dealership in 2013, Max has proved his willingness to go the extra mile time and again. After completing his cadetship in pre-owned sales, he achieved success as a Sales Consultant, working with clients to understand their requirements and find the right vehicle. Max’s diligence and drive saw him progress to Pre-Owned Sales Manager in 2016, and within three years, he was promoted to New Vehicle Sales Manager.

Success fuelled by family values

As Waverley BMW’s New Car Sales Manager, Max supports his team of Sales Consultants who guide clients through the sales process and provide a premium customer experience.

“We have a stable team, which creates a pleasant environment for staff and clients alike. As a customer, when the person selling you a vehicle or servicing your car knows your name, it makes you feel special. You know you’re doing business with the right company.”

It’s an approach Max sees extended to every team member at Jowett Motor Group, creating a genuinely caring culture for both clients and staff that starts from the top.

“We see the Jowett family actively working within the business. Tony, our Managing Director, makes regular appearances at the dealerships. Members of the Jowett family are actively involved in all of the JMG businesses, so they see and know what happens on a day-to-day basis, which motivates people to want to do the best job possible. We have a high-performance culture, but people turn up for the right reasons.”

With targets and KPIs to achieve and industry trends to be across, Max relishes the challenge, variety and fast pace of his role. But he also remembers to step back and acknowledge the successes.

“Whenever possible, the dealership gets together to celebrate the wins. Monthly, the entire dealership gathers for lunch to celebrate that we are a high-performing dealership, acknowledge the challenges, and when we do win, we let people know they’re doing a good job and that we value their input.”

Sustainable high performance

When Max looks to the future, he feels energised about the direction and opportunities on the horizon for Jowett Motor Group.

“I think it’s incredibly exciting. It is a privilege to work in a high-performing dealership under the JMG umbrella, which has two amazing brands in our portfolio, BMW and Honda. The conversation continues around continued and sustained growth, which is exciting because it gives people opportunities to move into different roles across the group, and we have a very strong focus on hiring within.”
