A newfound passion
Lauren Magro is the first to admit her success at Jowett Motor Group isn’t exactly due to a lifelong love of cars. Yet her vehicle knowledge has certainly come a long way from her early days in the industry where she turned to YouTube to learn what the different dashboard warning lights meant!
What makes Lauren such an exceptional Service Advisor at South Yarra BMW (she consistently rates amongst Jowett Motor Group’s most top-performing) is her unwavering customer focus, positivity, and determination, complemented by the stability and support of a progressive family-owned business.
“Five years ago, I didn’t know the difference between petrol and diesel,” Lauren says. “To now be one of the highest-performing Service Advisors is incredible! I’m not in this industry for a passion for cars; it’s the customers, fast-paced environment and variety. And at Jowett Motor Group, I genuinely feel the company cares about me. I’m not just a number.”
That sense of security and care is a breath of fresh air for Lauren, who initially planned on a career as a teacher. However, she struggled to balance university studies with making ends meet and decided to take a gap year.
After gaining a receptionist role at a car dealership, Lauren discovered a rewarding new path in the automotive industry. She acquired experience across multiple businesses and brands, working as a Concierge and then stepping up to Service Advisor, and realised she’d found her passion.
“I’d worked at South Yarra BMW years ago when it was run by a different company. When I found out Jowett Motor Group had taken it over, I got the sense things had changed. So, I came back in 2022, and it has been the best decision I have made for my career so far. My first week, we all went out for dinner on the Friday, and I thought, ‘It’s like a family here.’ I didn’t have that before. There’s a real level of care.”

A true team that has your back
There is never a dull moment at South Yarra BMW - and Lauren wouldn’t have it any other way! As a Service Advisor, she’s the main point of contact for clients, helping them make informed decisions on vehicle maintenance and repairs and ensuring a seamless customer experience.
“We’re like the middle person between the client and our Technicians. We conduct all communication with the client, so our Technicians can focus on the vehicles. It’s a very high-volume dealership, so there is no such thing as a boring day! I enjoy the challenge and liaising with customers - they make me feel very loved.”
Working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment means Lauren must be flexible and adaptable. Yet, rising to each challenge is made so much easier knowing she has the support of her high-performing and close-knit team.
“I know I can always go to my manager for advice. It’s a supportive, fun and vibrant environment. We celebrate each other’s birthdays, and on the first Friday of every month, the whole dealership has a barbecue downstairs, which our Dealership Principal actually cooks up for everyone. I think that’s a really nice touch.”
Although the automotive industry is still male-dominated, Lauren sees Jowett Motor Group taking real strides in turning this around and has always felt respected for who she is.
“We have a lot of women at our dealership, and I really do believe that Jowett Motor Group wants to see more women in management positions. My manager constantly asks me, ‘Where do you want to go next?’ So, even though I’m happy in my role at the moment, I know that if I wanted to progress to a managerial position, I’d just have to ask, and they’d support me to get there.”
Green light for growth
When Lauren reflects on her career, she feels a deep sense of pride. From struggling to find her feet at university to a sustainable, prosperous career, she’s achieved so much - and at Jowett Motor Group, she knows the sky’s the limit.
“I started in this industry thinking it was a way to earn some money, find my feet and work out what I wanted to do. Along the way, I discovered my passion. I wish I’d known about this career path in high school - it would have saved me so much stress back then (and uni fees)! I’m recognised and rewarded for my performance and work ethic at Jowett Motor Group. They’ve made me feel like a big fish in a small pond, even though our pond is huge.”

“You don’t need to be a trained technician to be a Service Advisor. You don’t even need to have automotive experience to get your foot in the door. If you’re organised, patient, people-focused and looking for a fast-paced environment with room to grow, then this is the career for you.”
